S30145 Consistent Maintenance & Inspections Delivery Programme (Phase 2)

Overview

National Highways (NH) is the government-owned company responsible for planning, designing, building, operating, and maintaining England's motorways and major A-roads, known as the Strategic Road Network (SRN). NH's regional teams are reliant on different ways of working to plan, manage, complete and assure their routine maintenance and inspections activities, which has led to inconsistent asset interventions/outcomes being achieved across the SRN. A recent discovery task reviewed the effectiveness of regional approaches and found that they created significant safety, legal, reputational and financial risk to the organisation because they impair NH's ability to make and evidence consistent robust decision-making around the management of assets. The Consistent Maintenance & Inspections Delivery Programme has therefore been commissioned to deliver and embed improvement initiatives to address inconsistencies identified within the operational delivery of maintenance and inspections. The Programme will drive nationally consistent asset interventions and outcomes, directly enhancing the safety, reliability, and resilience of the SRN for road users. Whilst significantly strengthening delivery of NH's Highways Act responsibilities, this task will also help to meet the ORR action for consistent maintenance delivery as well as the Operations related Delivery Plan commitments.
