Water Management - Legionella

Overview

The Northern Lighthouse Board has 208 lighthouses protecting the coastline of Scotland, the Northern Isles, The Western Isles and the Isle of Man as well as an office in Edinburgh, and bases in Oban, Inverness, Lerwick and Kirkwall. The lighthouse stations are infrequently visited, with some being annual or biennial maintenance visits of varying lengths as detailed in the requirements document. This should be taken into account in the risk assessment. Of these buildings 66 have a water system that is supplied from either mains, private or stored water supplied by NLB tender. NLB has a duty to ensure those systems are assessed, compliant and maintained to ensure they pose no risk. It should be noted on all lighthouse station sites that the water system is used for washing, showering and flushing toilets, bottled water is provided for drinking and cooking. For mains sites bottled water is still the preferred means for drinking water. All stations with water have UV and particulate filters within the water system, unfortunately the UV system is switched off between visits and is not optimally maintained. NLB supplement the UV system by storing water automatically dosed with a silver stabilised hydrogen peroxide solution at 250 parts per million. The Northern Lighthouse Board is seeking to appoint a Contractor who will: - Undertake Legionella Risk assessments, remedial works and advise necessary control measures and testing regimes to all buildings, structures or assets with hot and cold-water systems and services at all easily accessible road end sites. For remote sites the Contractor will carry out a desk top risk assessment based on information provided by NLB. Answer ad hoc queries and provide advice on legionella related matters at NLB sites. When required, approximately every three years, the Contractor will provide suitable and sufficient training or refresher training to NLB Technicians to allow them to gather the appropriate information on the remote sites.
