DWP and Jobcentre support for starting a business
If you are claiming Universal Credit or another benefit and want to work for yourself, speak to your Jobcentre Plus work coach before spending money. Support can be available, but the old New Enterprise Allowance is no longer open to new participants. The useful question now is what current help applies to your circumstances, not what an old article says you could claim.
The New Enterprise Allowance has closed
The New Enterprise Allowance, usually shortened to NEA, was a real Department for Work and Pensions programme. Eligible claimants could be referred by a Jobcentre Plus work coach for business mentoring and, if accepted, financial support while starting a business. It closed to new participants on 1 January 2022.
Plenty of websites still describe NEA as though you can apply today. You cannot rely on that advice. Do not build a start-up budget around the old allowance or any weekly figure attached to it.
What help may be available now
GOV.UK says people moving from benefits into self-employment may be able to get help from local organisations and government-backed business support schemes. If you receive Universal Credit, you may also qualify for a start-up period. During that period your payments are based on your actual monthly earnings, you do not have to look for other work, and you receive support from a work coach trained to work with self-employed people.
That is not an automatic business grant, and eligibility depends on your claim and whether the business is accepted as gainful self-employment. Your work coach can explain the current test, what evidence you need and whether other local support is available.
