An asset register is a central list of equipment and other property owned or controlled by a business. Offices, care providers, contractors, landlords and service firms use one to locate items, support insurance information, plan replacement and reconcile records. Each entry should identify the asset, its category and location, a serial or internal ID, purchase date, recorded value and any useful note. The level of detail should reflect the value and importance of the item.
Choose a consistent naming and numbering system before the list becomes large. Record movements between sites, disposals and replacements promptly so the register still reflects what the business holds. Common mistakes include treating consumable stock as fixed assets, using a vague description such as 'laptop', leaving serial numbers unrecorded and assuming the value entered is automatically suitable for accounts or insurance. Keep purchase evidence and maintenance records separately where needed. This template is an organisational register only. It does not calculate depreciation, establish ownership, perform a valuation or replace accounting, insurance, security or statutory records.
